ABOUT THE ALBUM
Arguably the most influential of all British folk singer/songwriters, Ewan MacColl began his career as a radio actor and soon progressed to playwright and stage actor. In 1950 he changed the focus of his career from acting and playwriting to singing and composing folk and topical songs, releasing several albums - many of which with English folk song collector and singer A.L. Lloyd, and a number of LPs with Irish singer songwriter Dominic Behan, brother of the playwright, Brendan Behan. In 1956, MacColl fell in love with the American Peggy Seeger (sister of folk icon Pete) and began a collaboration that would inspire his best works, among them the gritty "Dirty Old Town" and the classic ballad "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," which earned MacColl a Grammy award and Roberta Flack a #1 hit in 1972. MacColl's songs have been recorded by artists as diverse as the Pogues and Elvis Presley, to the Clancy Brothers and Johnny Cash. Presented here is one of MacColl's and Seeger's finest collaborations - the classic 1966 album, the Manchester Angel - a landmark album of the British folk movement of the 1960's. All selections newly remastered.
