Whether using a steak-bone to fret his axe or some other more conventional slide tool, McDowell's ringing guitar technique was a living link to the pre-war era, the perfect complement to his thoroughly compelling vocals. Although he was "discovered" late in life, by the time Fred McDowell passed away of cancer on July 3, 1972 in Memphis, he'd triumphantly made up for lost time, leaving behind a blues legacy that will never be forgotten. The slide guitar master's classic 1969 London Sessions, featuring the hits that influenced a generation of rockers including the Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt and Hot Tuna.
