Chain Lightning

Chain Lightning is a hidden gem that compellingly showcases his musical evolution. Released in 1978, Chain Lightning perfectly balances McLean’s folk roots and a more polished, mainstream sound, making it a fantastic entry point for listeners who love his storytelling but crave something more diverse and energetic. From the first notes of the title track, “Chain Lightning,” the album immediately grabs your attention with its upbeat, electric energy. It's a departure from McLean’s usual acoustic-driven sound, but it’s clear that this shift is intentional. The song has a rhythmic pulse that feels fresh and exciting, with McLean’s signature voice soaring above lush instrumentation. The catchy chorus is infectious and anthemic, showing McLean’s ability to craft pop-friendly songs while keeping his poetic lyrics intact.
