Music 81 (Polish Jazz vol. 69) (IEX)

Music 81' holds a special place in Tomasz Stanko's discography. Recorded in a period of great political tensions in Poland, a time when the future seemed uncertain and Stanko also struggled with his own personal quandaries. What is striking in this music from the very first measures is the turn toward mainstreamtype timing and 'groove' thinking - naturally, in Stanko's own version, with all the arsenal of his free jazz tools of expression. 'Music 81' is definitely worth rediscovering. Tomasz Stanko - anavowed free jazzman and partner of the genre's great masters - Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, John Surman and Edward Vesala - brought together a wonderfully swinging straight-ahead jazz and the unique space of freedom afforded by free jazz.Only 300 copies.
