Tommy Boy is one of the most influential independent labels in hip-hop and dance music history. Founded in 1981 by Tom Silverman in New York City, the label became a cultural engine for groundbreaking artists who blurred genre lines and defined the sound of the 1980s and ’90s. Tommy Boy introduced the world to acts like Afrika Bambaataa & Soul Sonic Force, whose 1982 single “Planet Rock” helped launch the electro-hip-hop movement.
